Make Your Hiking Boots Last Forever

Caring for your hiking boots will prolong their life and make them more comfortable during long hikes. Bothmen's boots and women's boots provide support during the most challenging of climbs. Hiking bootsare designed to protect your feet while you're enjoying the outdoors, and proper maintenance will determine how much comfort and protection they can offer. Neglecting your hiking boots can cause an unpleasant time on the trail, but a little attention to detail will ensure you have the safest and most comfortable footwear possible.
Instructions:
1.Treat new hiking boots with a high-quality boot sealer. Before wearing the boots, apply the sealer according to the manufacturer's directions at the points where the boot meets the sole. This can help to prevent water penetration.
2.Waterproof boots with a silicone treatment.Choose a solution formulated specifically for hiking boots. Apply a thin coat of the treatment to the entire outer surface of the boots, except the soles, laces and grommets, with an old toothbrush. Allow the boots to dry for at least 24 hours before wearing. Waterproof hiking boots make rainy climates or excursions more comfortable.
3.Wash leather boots thoroughly using saddle soap. Allow them dry completely in a warm place. Apply a leather protector to clean, dry boots according to the manufacturer's instructions.
4.Remove dirt and mud immediately after taking off your hiking boots. Using a stiff wire brush, move over the surface of the boots in a single direction until no more dirt can be removed. Always remove dirt after every hiking trip and before storage.
5.Clean boots at least every two weeks. Use a saddle soap for leather hiking boots and clean them more frequently if you are using them heavily or they have become extremely dirty. Allow them to air dry for at least 24 hours for best results. Reapply silicone treatment to waterproof hiking boots and use a leather protector once the boots are completely dry.
6.Remove odors from the inside of hiking boots. Sprinkle the soles with baking soda and allow them to air out. You can also use odor-absorbing foot inserts.
7.Store clean hiking boots in a cool, dry location. Place them in a shoe box in the closet for best results. Take unused leather hiking boots out once a month and allow them to air out to prevent mold formation or mustiness.
Tips and warnings:
1.Spray-on waterproofing treatments are available for hiking boots, but they are generally not as effective. They are more convenient, but manual application results in better coverage.
2.Dry the inside of hiking boots by stuffing them with crumpled newspaper, which will absorb excess moisture. Never put hiking boots in the washing machine or dryer, as the extreme temperatures could cause irreparable damage.
3.Do not apply a boot sealer to hiking boots that are labeled "waterproof" by the manufacturer. The sealant could damage the material. If you are unsure if your boots are considered waterproof, contact the manufacturer for more information.

Harley-Davidson Women's Carrie Dress Boot

Dress boots are short leather boots worn by men. Built like dress shoes, but with uppers covering the ankle, versions of the boots are used as an alternative to these in bad weather or rough outdoor situation, and as a traditional option for day time formalwear.
Until the end of the Victorian period, men did not wear shoes (which were reserved for women), preferring only boots during daytime and court slippers (pumps) when eveningwear was worn. At that time, long riding boots were common and dress boots were for more formal occasions, so patent leather was often used, as well as ordinary black calf. Gradually, these boots became more common for formal evening use, so that by the Edwardian era, patent boots were generally worn when there would be no dancing. Patent leather use during day dropped, and formal morning clothes soon incorporated either shoes or plain calf dress boots. In the evening, the wearing of both boots and court slippers similarly declined as shoes came to dominate, though slippers are still worn with white tie.
As the use of riding boots declined with the advent of cars (automobiles), another use for these short boots developed as tougher alternatives to shoes for harsh weather or terrain, where hobnails would originally have been worn with sturdier versions of town boots. Now that shoes are so much more common than boots, and formal clothing is worn so infrequently, this is now the most frequent use of dress boots.

Men's shoes can be categorized by how they are closed:

    * Oxfords (also referred as "Balmorals"): the vamp has a V-shaped slit to which the laces are attached; also known as "closed lacing". The word "Oxford" is sometimes used by American clothing companies to market shoes that are not Balmorals, such as Blüchers.
    * Blüchers (American), Derbys (British): the laces are tied to two pieces of leather independently attached to the vamp; also known as "open lacing".
    * Monk-straps: a buckle and strap instead of lacing
    * Slip-ons: There are no lacings or fastenings. The popular loafers are part of this category, as well as less popular styles, such as elastic-sided shoes.

Men's shoes can also be decorated in various ways:

    * Plain-toes: have a sleek appearance and no extra decorations on the vamp.
    * Cap-toes: has an extra layer of leather that "caps" the toe. This is possibly the most popular decoration.
    * Brogues (American: wing-tips): The toe of the shoe is covered with a perforated panel, the wing-tip, which extends down either side of the shoe. Brogues can be found in both balmoral and blucher styles.

Dress shoes are categorized by smooth and supple leather uppers, leather soles, and narrow sleek figure. Casual shoes are characterized by sturdy leather uppers, non-leather outsoles, and wide profile.

Some designs of dress shoes can be worn by either gender. The majority of dress shoes have an upper covering, commonly made of leather, enclosing most of the lower foot, but not covering the ankles. This upper part of the shoe is often made without apertures or openings, but may also be made with openings or even itself consist of a series of straps, e.g. an open toe featured in women's shoes. Shoes with uppers made high to cover the ankles are also available; a shoe with the upper rising above the ankle is usually considered a boot but certain styles may be referred to as high-topped shoes or high-tops. Usually, a high-topped shoe is secured by laces or zippers, although some styles have elastic inserts to ease slipping the shoe on.
